What does a Gen Z workforce crave beyond a paycheck? Hint: it's purpose
Gen Z is changing the employee engagement game.
A good salary? Of course.
Career growth? Absolutely..
But is that enough to keep Gen Z employees engaged and around for the long run?
Not quite.
For today’s Gen Z workforce, employee engagement is about more than perks. They want to feel connected to their workplace, their values, and most importantly, a sense of purpose. They want to know: Does my company stand for something? Does my work have an impact? And can I be part of something meaningful?
For HR and People teams, this means rethinking what employee engagement really looks like.
So, how do you actually engage Gen Z?
1. Give them something to believe in.
Gen Z wants to work for organisations that stand for something beyond business.
Make your values visible through initiatives around sustainability, community, inclusion, or social impact. When employees can see what their organisation cares about, they’re more likely to feel connected to it.
2. Turn values into experiences.
Purpose shouldn't live only in presentations, policies, or CSR reports.
Give employees opportunities to experience those values firsthand — through a sustainability initiative, a volunteering activity, a conscious consumption experience, or a cause they can actively contribute to.
3. Make participation voluntary, meaningful and fun.
Gen Z doesn't want another mandatory workshop on their calendar.
The best employee experiences are ones people want to participate in. Keep them simple, interactive and relevant, while giving employees a clear reason to care.
From our experience at Gofig, working closely with HR and People teams across 100+ partner organisations, we’ve seen this shift firsthand. From sustainability-led challenges to surplus-led team engagement, from workshops on how employees can contribute towards an organization's ESG goals to fitness challenges, these activities give employees a tangible way to engage with the organisation’s values.
When HR teams create experiences that combine participation with purpose, they can drive higher employee engagement, stronger participation, and a more connected workplace culture.
And that connection matters when it comes to retaining Gen Z talent.
